Where I Hail From

I hail from winding dirt paths hidden
under the watchful whispery quaking aspens.
I was born of lichens and crab-apples.
Hear the drowsy frowsy buzzing of the hornets
orbiting their papier mache planets.

I hail from the oldest- you -set –the- example,
and four-eyes, bookworm, teacher’s pet, the names still sting.
I was born of the elfin pixie cut, the green shag rug,
the Spirit of 76 and fried green tomatoes
on a breathless Michigan summer oven evening.

I hail from tornado watches across Seneca, Hancock
and Lenawee counties from the basement where I was moored.
I was born of Dee, and a Richard who is a Dick,
woodworking hobbyist, prodigious producer of paddles,
twisted brand of justice applied across the board.

I hail from Fischer Price, Barbies, Weeble Wobbles and
Nancy Drew.  Ziggy combs, nanoo nanoo, white leather rollerskates.
I was born of Ohio Skate, Aquarius Athletic Club, Olde Towne Arcade
and Frischs’ Hot Fudge Sundae Cake.  Ten dollars spent on Asteroids
just to get my name on the screen – TMG - and tempt the fates.

I hail from a long line of artists, whose pictures are now faded.
Look on my walls to see proof of their existence in a swash of ink.
I was born of art for Art’s sake, of dreams carefully shelved; like
pickled zucchini jars gathering dust in the drowsy frowsy basement,
The motes swirl magnetically, comets racing towards the brink.
We had to select a poem from an anthology under the heading of "Generations", write a short response, and explain in class why we liked, and/or found the poem interesting. Instead of a paper explicating the piece, I chose the creative route, exploring the themes and structure of the poem through my own writing. The original poem is listed here:

Where I'm From by George Ella Lyon

I am from clothespins,
from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch.
(Black, glistening
it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush,
the Dutch elm
whose long gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.

I'm from fudge and eyeglasses,
from Imogene and Alafair.
I'm from the know-it-alls
and the pass-it-ons,
from perk up and pipe down.
I'm from He restoreth my soul
with a cottonball lamb
and ten verses I can say myself.

I'm from Artemus and Billie's Branch,
fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost
to the auger
the eye my father shut to keep his sight.

Under my bed was a dress box
spilling old pictures,
a sift of lost faces
to drift beneath my dreams.
I am from those moments -
snapped before I budded-
leaf-fall from the family tree.

This is really great! I think I even like yours better than the original.

"Drowsy-frowsy" hmmm... that's brilliant. :D
